Data Science Series Moscow, October 4th, 2012
Over 150 data scientists and decision makers attended the first Russian Data Science Series, held in Moscow on October 4th. The event was organized by EMC Greenplum, in close cooperation with National Research University The Higher School of Economics (HSE) and Skolkovo University.
Greenplum had a number of goals with this first Russian Data Science Series. In the first place they wanted to establish a meeting place for Big Data enthusiasts looking for he added value data science can provide businesses and government. Secondly, Greenplum wanted to bring together a number of innovative ideas on big data. With over 150 attendees from the academic and the business world, Greenplum has clearly succeeded in its mission of putting big data on the agenda in Russia.
The collaboration with both the Higher School of Economics and the Open University of Skolkovo is very important. As in other parts of the world, there is a lack of good data scientists, and these educational partners can build a curriculum to train these scientists. The Higher School of Economics (HSE) was founded on November 27th, 1992, by an Ordinance of the RF Government. In October 2009 the Higher School of Economics received the status of a National Research University. The Open University Of Skolkovo (OpUS) is a part of the ecosystem of SkolkovoInnovation Centre. It is a source of prospective applicants (Masters and PhD) for the future Skolkovo University, a source of interns for Skolkovo partner companies, and a source of projects for business incubators.
Based on the successful Data Science Series on October 4th, Greenplum and HSE have agreed on a number of next steps, such as the creation of new educational standards and the setup of a Data Science degree program for the Russian Federation.
